13 Books to (Hopefully) Finish Before 2024

Writer's picture: Little Literary MomentsLittle Literary Moments

Okay, friends, where has this year gone? I’ve barely read this year, and now the year is almost over! (Thanks work, mental health, and (sometimes) a social life haha.)

There are also a bunch of books I started and then put down, never because they weren’t good, but because my brain just wasn’t able to read at that particular moment. But, as of right now, I’m reading more again and enjoying it, so I’ve compiled a list of those books I started previously, but hope to finish by the end of this year! Have you read any of them? Share your favorites below!

  1. Daisy Jones and the Six* by Taylor Jenkins Reid - So, this book was supposed to be a #readwithllm pick, but I dropped the ball. I hope to finish this soon, because I’m loving it, and then I can finally get that post…you know…posted.

  2. Despised and Rejected by Rose Allatini - If you’re saying to yourself, Ami, haven’t you been reading this book forever?, the answer is yes, thank you so much for asking. Every time I pick up the first of the Persephone Books that I’ve collected, I immediately sink into the prose. But life seems to ALWAYS GET IN THE WAY. But, now is the time…hopefully!

  3. Stamped from the Beginning by Ibram X. Kendi - I started reading this book in 2020 when we, as a country, were trying to reckon with the racist police state that was (and continues to) systematically killing Black folks, but it was also when I was studying for the bar exam, and the closer I came to that, the less and less I could read anything that wasn’t bar prep. But I’ve read other works by Kendi and am always learning something, so I can’t wait to get back to this book.

  4. Against the Loveless World by Susan Abulhawa - I’ve started this book twice and each time I’ve immediately been hooked. But then I’ve had to read other books for this blog or for my bookclub and I’ve put it down with every intention of coming back to it. And I still have that intention.

  5. Little Rabbit by Alyssa Songsiridej - I can’t remember when I started this, but I feel like it was during one of the literary award seasons. I love a book about a sad, aimless girl in her 20s, trying to figure out her identity and engaging in (sometimes questionable) romantic endeavors (please don’t read too much into that lol).

  6. I’m a Fan by Sheena Patel - I think this was another one I started in a past literary award season and had to put down when work became crazy. I definitely want to jump back into it soon, hopefully before we wrap up the year!

  7. The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson - I started reading this book as a part of a readalong hosted by ashleeisbooked on Instagram. Then…as is often the case…work got in the way. But, here’s hoping work is less in the way so that more reading can be done.

  8. The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O’Farrell - This was one of the Women’s prize nominees. I was so unsuccessful with reading the Women’s prize longlist, but this was one I started and want to finish…now if only I could find my copy…

  9. Don’t Cry for Me by Daniel Black - I started this book during as a member of #teamkiwi during the most recent littlecafereadathon and I was really into it, but I got caught up in one of my other reads. I definitely want to dive back in. (Also, I’m trying to get through some of my BOTM backlog to justify my ongoing binge buying each month.)

  10. Siren Queen by Nghi Vo - I started this book as part of the Tarot Readathon hosted by Noelle7Pages but I never got to finish it. I’m always fascinated by Vo’s novels though, and I can’t wait to find out what the rest of this one has in store.

  11. Tomorrow, Tomorrow, Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin - Okay, to be honest, I’m not actually particularly looking forward to finishing this one because I’ve read about half of it and am just not feeling it. But my book club is reading it, and I do try to finish book club picks so that I can take part in the conversation.

  12. House of Leaves by Macus Mark Z. Danielewski - Much like Daisy Jones and the Six, this was a pick for #readwithllm - but…and this will come as a surprise…I didn’t stick to my own schedule. I still hope to get the post out before the end of the year though (also, I’m writing this particular entry before the end of November, so do me a favor and don’t mention whether I got November’s post up in time - thanks!).

  13. Roman Stories by Jhumpa Lahiri - This was another bookclub pick and I’ve read the first three stories already. I’ve been a longtime fan of Lahiri and look forward to finishing this soon.
