HAPPY NEW YEAR BOOKISH FRIENDS! I am wishing you all the love, peace, and light that 2023 has to offer. I am also hoping you had an incredible reading year in 2022 and that you have an even better one in 2023. My reading in 2022 had some gaps and long stretches of reading slumps, but I still managed to indulge in some incredible reads that I’ve listed below for ya. All but the last of these were 5 star reads (with The Sentence being a strong 4 star read that stuck with me). What were your favorite reads of 2022? Share below!

(Note - these are just in the order that I read them (except for The Sentence) because of these, I genuinely couldn’t pick a favorite.)

  1. Public Faces, Secret Lives* by Dr. Wendy Rouse

  2. Great Circle by Maggie Shipstead

  3. Somebody’s Daughter by Ashley C. Ford

  4. The Final Revival of Opal and Nev by Dawnie Walton

  5. Hood Feminism by Mikki Kendall

And how about those 2023 plans?

Well, as per usual, I have goals for this upcoming year, but no set TBR…because I…am…a mood reader. I do, however, have some ideas for books that might meet these particular endeavors. Here are those goals:

  • More long reads! - Every year, I’m intimidated by the longer reads on my shelf, but almost every time I actually pick one up, once I get into it, I. Am. Obsessed. So, time to get over that long read fear. To help me in this, many of my #readwithLLM reads are going to be longer reads.

  • More books by BIPOC authors - every year, I do make efforts to read books by authors who don’t look like me, but I think there’s always room to broaden your horizons. (And if you look above, so many of those books are BIPOC authors, I’m clearly missing out on great literature if I’m not making this effort.) To aid me in this effort, I’ve signed up for the StoryGraph reads the World 2023 challenge.

  • More nonfiction - It was only in the last few years that I found that I actually liked nonfiction reads (and I’m going to blame my public school history education for making me think I didn’t for as long as I did). So this year, I want to explore the wide variety of books available to me now that I don’t actually shun the genre altogether.

What are you hoping to read in 2023?
