Hi ya, bookish friends! Can you believe we’re already (more than) half way through 2024. I’m gonna be honest, 24 is one of my least favorite numbers and this year…seems to be taking that personally. Work, health, and some personal stuff have all been a dumpster fire. But the one consistently good part of this year? The reads I’ve had along the way! Check out some of my favs below!
Best book you’ve read so far in 2024?
A Woman is No Man* by Etaf Rum - Check out my full review here, but goodness gracious, if I could read this book over for the first time again, I totally would.
Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2024?
I don’t really read many series, and haven’t read any sequels in the traditional sense yet, but I did read, and love, Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs by Caitlin Doughty, which is the second book I’ve read by her.
New release you haven’t read yet, but want to?
James by Percival Everett
Most anticipated release for the second half of 2024?
The Grey Wolf by Louise Penny
Biggest disappointment?
Brokeback Mountain by Annie Proulx
Biggest surprise?
Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver - I once vowed to myself that I would never read another book by Kingsolver after reading The Poisonwood Bible because it remains one of the worst books I ever read, but I tried this out for my book club, and ended up loving it.
New favorite author?
I can’t choose between Etaf Rum and Xochitl Gonzalez, so I’ll choose both. Also, both have other books I haven’t devoured yet, so I definitely have some treats in my future.
Newest fictional crush?
Not really my thing
Newest favorite character?
Probably Count Alexander Rostov from A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles.
Book that made you cry?
Tbh, I used to LOVE books that made me cry. I still do. But the last few years have been rough, so I have been less drawn to books that might emotionally destroy me. That being said, and please don’t laugh, The Dictionary People brought tears to my eyes because of how passionately the people were/are who are responsible for the OED.
Book that made you happy?
Also The Dictionary People by Sarah Ogilvie
Favorite book to movie adaptation you’ve seen so far this year?
I haven’t watched the adaptation yet, but I loved A Gentleman in Moscow so much, so I really hope the show lives up to the book!
Favorite post you’ve written this year?
I really love my open letters generally, but the one to Casey McQuiston was pretty emotional for me.
Most beautiful book you’ve bought this year?
Probably the Barnes and Noble special edition of Real Americans by Rachel Khong - painted edges get me every time.
What books do you really need to read before the end of this year?
The limit does not exist. My TBR is neverending, and between books I want to read just because and books I want to read for posts for this blog, I really can’t count that high. Here are the top 13:
The Pairing by Casey McQuiston
Men Have Called Her Crazy by Anna Marie Tendler
Middlemarch by George Eliot
Wellness by Nathan Hill
Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi
The It Girl by Ruth Ware
War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy
Ducks, Newburyport by Lucy Ellmann
The Water Dancer by Ta-Nehisi Coates
Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid
A Room of One’s Own by Virginia Woolf
The Sea, The Sea by Iris Murdoch
