Booker Prize 2022 Reaction and Reflection

Writer's picture: Little Literary MomentsLittle Literary Moments

Congrats to Shehan Karunatilaka, this year’s Booker prize winner for The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida.* I haven’t finished The Seven Moons yet, but when I first started reading it, I predicted it would be one of my favorites of the year (another book from the shortlist also fits that description), so I was so incredibly excited to learn of Karunatilaka’s win and can’t wait to see what he writes in the future. Below, find my ratings for the books I did manage to read (can I continue to blame my chaotic work schedule for my lack of success finishing the whole longlist?), which books I’m still reading, which one I DNF’d (for now), and which ones I have yet to read but can’t wait to start.

What I’m Still Reading

  • The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida by Shehan Karunatilaka (a predicted 5 star read)

  • Trust by Hernan Diaz (a predicted 4 or 5 star read)

5 Star Reads

  • The Trees by Percival Everett (if this isn’t one of my favorites of the year, I will be shocked)

4 Star Reads

3 Star Reads

2 Star Reads

  • Treacle Walker by Alan Garner

  • Booth by Karen Joy Fowler

  • Case Study by Graeme Macrae Burnet

DNF’d for Now

  • Glory by Noviolet Bulawayo - I feel like I need to explain this one. I was enjoying this book, and I do intend to return to it, but work and life have been so chaotic at the moment, and I just wasn’t in the headspace for this book at the moment. I want to sit down with it and really be able to reckon with its many layers. I can’t do that right now. But I have some time off towards the end of the year, and I hope to revisit it then.
