Can I Finish These 13 Books Before the End of the Year?

…Probably not, but I’m sure gonna try.

Hiya bookish friends! Today’s a similar post to one I did earlier in the year, but that one was aspirational…this one is probably unhinged, but also one grounded in the reality of books I might be able to finish if I have enough time. (I don’t…but we’re ignoring reality right now, my friends. Won’t you join me?)

So, here are 13 books I’ve started and want to finish (or want to start and finish) before the year ends. Whose with me?

  1. Despised and Rejected by Rose Allatini - This Persephone classic is one of the books on my previous aforementioned post, and I’m still not done. But I’ve made progress. And something about queer classic literature (see below for another) really speaks to my soul. I’m truly loving this book, I just tend to put it down for what I think will be a moment, and then that moment spans months. Whoops.

  2. The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida * by Shehan Karunatilaka - Booker Prize winner and potential favorite book of the year if only I could finish it, my hope is that this is one of the books I spend my holiday reading, sipping on hot cocoa and reveling in the incredibly literary world that Karunatilaka has created.

  3. White is For Witching by Helen Oyeyemi - This book was supposed to be October’s installment in #readwithLLM, but unfortunately my mental health declined around that time, just as my work obligations went from strenuous to downright impossible. But the part I’ve read was great, and I hope to dive back into it now that things have calmed down a bit (knock on wood) and I’ve found a better balance of my mental health meds.

  4. Maps of Our Spectacular Bodies by Maddie Mortimer - Another Booker nominee that I started but haven’t yet finished. One year, I actually will read all the Booker prize nominees before the winner is announced. This was not that year.

  5. Trust by Hernan Diaz - See The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida and Maps of Our Spectacular Bodies.

  6. A Woman Looking at Men Looking at Women by Siri Hustvedt - I started this book at the beginning of the year, not knowing exactly what it was about. Turns out, it’s a collection of art criticism essays, which is so far out of my comfort zone, but I’ve still been enjoying it. This is probably the least likely book to be finished on this list though, because it. Is. long.

  7. On the Road by Jack Kerouac - I haven’t started this one yet, but since I have a cat literally named after one of the Beat greats, I feel like I am obligated to read one of the most iconic books to come out of this generation.

  8. The Duke and I by Julia Quinn - Earlier this year, I ordered the @onceuponabookclub special editions of the Bridgerton books. The first part of the set came in October, and I just started this one. I want to read the books before I watch the series.

  9. Dune by Frank Herbert - This one is (hopefully) a given, since it is my current #readwithLLM read.

  10. Song for the Missing by Pierre Jarawan - I am SO FAR behind on my ARC reads and reviews and this is one that has been on my NetGalley shelf for almost as long as I’ve had my NetGalley account. Whoops.

  11. Five Survive by Holly Jackson - Also an ARC that I’m behind on. This one hasn’t been on my shelf for nearly as long as Song for the Missing, but I absolutely adore Jackson and was SO excited when I was approved for an ARC. Now that it’s actually out, I feel like a review is in order.

  12. Do I Feel Better Yet? by Madeleine Trebenski - Yet another NetGalley ARC that has been on my shelf for far too long. I’ve made quite a bit of progress in it though, and absolutely love the humor Trebenski brings to life as a 20-something.

  13. Maurice by E.M. Forster - So, I’ve read this book once, but I recommended this for the @modernclassicsbookclub read and so I should, ya know, probs read it before the chat.
