Good morning, bookish friends! A few weeks ago, I did a Deep Dive into how books become movies and tv shows. A natural follow-up to that, then, is a look at some of my favorite adaptations. Some of these I even like (gasp) better than the books (yes, I know, that’s blasphemy).
So, here are a few of my favorite adaptations:
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen - Starting strong, here, my friends. But yes, I absolutely love Jane Austen. I saw a TikTok recently that really summed up why…find it here. In particular, I love the 1980 BBC miniseries (although the Colin Firth one is also great), because this is the one I grew up watching. I used to hate it. Now, I would watch it every day if I could. (In fact, I’m probably going to spend my Valentine’s Day eating chocolate and watching this with my cats.)
Nancy Drew by Carolyne Keene - The Nancy Drew series was an integral part of my childhood and I recently started rereading some of the earlier books because (as I’ve probably mentioned approximately seven million times before) I often turn to books for children. Even though it doesn’t really stick to its source material, I am particularly fond of the CW series that is currently airing.
Harry Potter by JK Rowling - So, you’ll notice this doesn’t have an affiliate link. And that’s because, given JK Rowling’s history of transphobia, I cannot in good conscience encourage folks to buy these books. I, myself, stopped purchasing the reprinted Hufflepuff editions before I could get them all (despite the fact that I love yellow and have self-identified as a Hufflepuff for years), because I can no longer support her. However, I can’t deny that the Harry Potter franchise was foundational to my love of reading and how I relate to the world. Harry Potter is how I found many of my childhood friends. Harry Potter is what led me to believe in magic. Harry Potter made me believe that good could conquer evil.
Shadowhunters (aka The Mortal Instruments) by Cassandra Clare - Full disclosure, I haven’t read this whole series. Candidly, this is probably one of those examples of “I like the TV show better.” So, not sure how the books are, beyond the first one. But the Freeform series is delightful.
Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman - This is one of the first books I read this year. And…much like with the above entry…I liked the movie better. Midnight margaritas, anyone?
