Greetings, bookish friends! The triumphant return of #readwithLLM posts are upon us, and I can't think of a better way to begin this new chapter than with A Gentleman in Moscow.* This book had just a bit of everything: found family, adventures big and small, great descriptions of food, and quite a few secrets sprinkled throughout. I'm so glad I not only picked up this book, but that I now have a chance to discuss it with all of you!
Here's what I envision with these posts. I've come up with a few questions that I would love your thoughts on, but I also want to open up the comments for any questions or thoughts you have. I do reserve the right to remove any comments that are offensive or hateful, because my goal is to foster a community of readers here, where folks are encouraged to share their thoughts and literary experiences.
So, without further ado, here are my questions and curiosities:
1.) This book obviously follows the adventures of the Count in the Metropol, but what is it actually about? Is there a cohesive story being told?
2.) As someone who primarily reads books by fem-identifying authors, I'm always a bit suspect of (presumably) cis men writing women. Who were the female characters in this novel? Were they fully developed?
3.) This book is quite long and powerful, though also at times meandering. Does it appear to be intentionally done in the style of some of the great Russian classics?
4.) SPOILER ALERT - In consideration of the ending - is this a spy novel?
5.) What was the purpose of the structure/footnotes throughout the novel?
6.) What did you think of the end?
7.) Have you read other books by Amor Towles? If so, how did this book compare?
8.) Do you plan on watching the screen adaptation?
9.) Did you like this novel?
