Hiya bookish friends! Welcome to the final #readwithLLM of 2024! I chose this book because it seemed like it would be a winter book. And gosh, it sure did live up to that particular expectation. I’m ultimately not sure exactly how I feel about Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead*, though my current thought is that the ending redeemed a book that I didn’t particularly care for for long swaths of the narrative.
Here's what I envision with these posts. I've come up with a few questions that I would love your thoughts on, but I also want to open up the comments for any questions or thoughts you have. I do reserve the right to remove any comments that are offensive or hateful, because my goal is to foster a community of readers here, where folks are encouraged to share their thoughts and literary experiences.
So, without further ado, here are my questions and curiosities:
Astrology itself is often a study in symbols and analogies/metaphors. What purpose does astrology serve in this narrative? What does it symbolize?
One of the aspects of this book that I genuinely did not like was its use of the phrase “testosterone autism” since it seemed to use autism as an insult. Did this, or other instances in the book, show that it is dated? Or did it bring you out of the narrative?
Books in translation are always an interesting topic. Do you think this was a good translation? What impact do you think that translation has on how a book is interpreted? What are your thoughts on the symbolism of the translation that occurs within the book itself by the narrator and Dizzy?
Does this book contain an unreliable narrator? If so, why? If so, why not?
What genre is this book? Is it a murder mystery? An environmental novel? Something else?
