Hiya bookish friends! I know this is a day-ish late, but welcome to the #readwithLLM community post for The Book of Cold Cases* by Simone St. James. I’m going to be totally honest with you - this was not my favorite #readwithLLM pick, but I think it’s interesting because as I was reading, I just kept thinking about how great of a discussion book this was, even though I really didn’t like it all that much. That made for a really interesting reading experience. But, I know it’s a really well regarded book, so I hope y’all enjoyed it! I can’t wait to discuss it with you.
Here's what I envision with these posts. I've come up with a few questions that I would love your thoughts on, but I also want to open up the comments for any questions or thoughts you have. I do reserve the right to remove any comments that are offensive or hateful, because my goal is to foster a community of readers here, where folks are encouraged to share their thoughts and literary experiences.
So, without further ado, here are my questions and curiosities:
This book follows a true crime blogger as she investigates her town’s biggest unsolved mystery. What are your thoughts on the ethics of the true crime community now?
One of the things that I found jarring about this book is that I went into it thinking I was reading a mystery, and even after the first [SPOILER ALERT] supernatural-esque incidents, I still didn’t realize I was reading a ghost story until later on. How would you categorize the genre of this book? What did you know about this book going into it? If you didn’t know about the ghost element, how did that impact your reading experience?
How did this book envision mental illness?
Have you read other books by Simone St. James? If so, how did this compare? If not, will you?
Did you like this book?
