Greetings, my bookish friends! As you may have noticed, I have been gone for quite some time - work, mental health stuff, physical health stuff (thanks, Covid) - have all contributed to my prolonged absence, but I am back now! And I’m so happy about that.
With my first new post, I wanted to do something a little different and new today and start a series of posts where I will periodically share a list of books, songs, movies, etc. for a specific vibe or mood. And I’m starting with my favorite weather ever - Things for Rainy Days! Share your favorite ways to spend time on a rainy day below.
Books
The Secret History* by Donna Tartt - How else could I start other than this book? This book is peak dark academia vibes, and on rainy (especially rainy AND stormy days), I can think of nothing better than sitting down with this book and a massive cup of tea and just lose myself in Tartt’s writing for hours on end.
The Colony by Audrey Magee - The gloomy, often rainy, weather in this book is almost a character in and of itself with how effectively it sets the tone for the rising political tensions that are so evident through its pages.
Lie with Me by Philippe Besson - Maybe it’s because I first read this book in autumn, but the melancholy of this queer story about love and life makes me want to revisit it every time I hear the pitter-patter of raindrops outside my window.
Gentlemen and Players by Joanne Harris - This was my first read in the dark academia sub-genre, and there’s something about that type of book (see the first book in this list) and I think it’s the overall dark vibes that lends itself so well to a rainy, dreary day.
Howl and Other Poems by Allen Ginsburg - Full disclosure - poetry is not usually my jam. BUT I do adore Ginsburg’s poetry and this is just such a great small but mighty volume to read when you’re trapped inside on a dreary day. (Also, one of my cats is named Allen Ginspurr, so I have to give a shout out to Ginsberg every now and again).

Songs
Almost Lover by A Fine Frenzy - I think I adore rainy days because of the (and forgive me for having already used this word) melancholy feelings they evoke (which is, truly, my natural state). And this song is just beautiful, simple, and yes, truly melancholy. (It also speaks to my angsty teenage years which I haven’t fully grown out of, even as I near 30.)
All I Ask by Adele - see explanation for Almost Lover - it applies here 100%
All Too Well (Sad Girl Autumn Version) by Taylor Swift - I’ve cried to this song while sitting in my car in the rain. No other explanation necessary.
Falling by Harry Styles - see explanation for All Too Well (Sad Girl Autumn Version) - it applies here 100%. What can I say? I am, to my core, dramatic.
Narcissistic Cannibal by EarlyRise - Specifically autumn rainy days when it’s chilly and there are dead leaves scattered on the ground. This song is that vibe specifically.
TV Shows/Movies
How to Get Away With Murder - Dark academia vibes, but make it Shonda Rhimes television.
Three Pines - While I didn’t always love this adaption of the Louise Penny novels, it does give off rainy day vibes.
Teen Wolf - I don’t know what it is about this show, but I have the urge to rewatch it every October. And there are plenty of rainy days in Beacon Hills. Definitely a good watch for a rainy evening
Twitches - Another autumn rainy day pick, but oh my gosh, this was peak DCOM. I watch it almost every year when Halloween is right around the corner.
Haven - It has been a while since I watched this show, but I feel like the rainy New England setting makes it the perfect show to binge on a rainy day. (If I’m misremembering it, feel free to correct me in the comments haha.)
Food and Drinks
Chili - Can you think of a single better thing to enjoy on a chilly, rainy evening? I sure can’t.
Apple Cider - For the fall girlies, myself included, this is a rainy day staple.
Lasagna - Warm, cheesy, filling - the perfect recipe for a rainy night!
Pumpkin donut - See apple cider donut. No further comment necessary.
Caramel Apples (Specifically the ones with peanuts - if you’re not allergic) - Maybe this post should just be about autumn vibes because that’s truly what I feel like every rainy day reminds me of.
